They can be a very useful resource - especially when shared with professional educators and students.. It's still important to guide students to useful sites - especially at the K12 level. If we teach them to evaluate web sites AND to check out good web sites frequently, they'll learn to recognize the difference between a hoax site and a well researched one.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02661543072663498364noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7466903283590988074.post-18556201607396977382011-01-20T18:59:40.726-08:002011-01-20T18:59:40.726-08:00Hi,

I did think that the teens were the promoters on this -and it's one reason we need to continue teaching our teens about these tools in the classroom. Blogs do have immense power for good, but I shudder when I find people who should know better using them as factual reference material. I have signed an entry on an online remembrance site, and thought it was a wonderful idea. I think that parents should still sit down and read to their children. However, the world will require students /workers to be proficient with technology and that will have to be taught in the school and at home, especially if we are to avoid the "digital divide" and exclude students whose parents don't have money to buy all the technology at home.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02661543072663498364noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7466903283590988074.post-62707163774925783012010-11-02T17:49:13.803-07:002010-11-02T17:49:13.803-07:00One of the issues with google is that many schools...One of the issues with google is that many schools block hotmail and google, which can make it difficult. It is up to the teacher to be well informed and to convince the administrators of the educational benefit. IT is also the teacher's responsibility to ensure that web safety is taught. (Librarians in Texas at least teach library and internet research skills to students.) To me, this is like teaching our children how to drive. We don't allow them to drive without some form of driving school first.. And schools do teach driver's ed. Letting them loose on social networking sites, chat rooms etc with no instructions about safety and appropriate behavior when something untoward happens is like putting children in a car with no instruction. We don't let our children loose outside until they know road safety. We don't let them drive without some form of instruction and we should encourage lessons in internet usage and safety while they are learning how to use the technology appropriately.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02661543072663498364noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7466903283590988074.post-82186034613717184032010-11-02T17:41:16.219-07:002010-11-02T17:41:16.219-07:00Wow- what a great idea as well. I wouldn't have thought about it for transplants, although I had thought about it for caregivers of Alzheimers. (My father in law suffered over 8 years, but my mother in law rarely had a free moment because she was the primary care giver.) I support the idea of having children use a blog instead of a paper journal, but on the other hand, the parental concern regarding privacy may be an issue. I do feel that many times as teachers we think we're doing a good job, but in reality, we're not. I know that students often want to learn, and they are learning - they just aren't learning what we think they ought to learn. Students today live in a different world. It's been said before that we cannot use our 19th century techniques in the 21st century - and I'm hoping that DE and technology will force us out of our complacency..... We'll see. I do know that I want to be on the cutting edge of all of this technology - which is really why I"m taking this class.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02661543072663498364noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7466903283590988074.post-68260200724020235742010-09-20T16:48:53.210-07:002010-09-20T16:48:53.210-07:00My younger sister (she will be 13 next week) is cu...My younger sister (she will be 13 next week) is currently attending 9th grade online through Kaplan online school.
